I'm going to see Furthur for the first time at the All Good Music Festival next month. I've avoided post-Jerry bands as much as possible, but I did see The Dead in 2009, and while I'm not too cynical about it yet, I do understand that it isn't "All Good."

So what are their best songs? Which ones fall flat? What should I be rooting for?

Full Terrapin Suite, Weather Report/Let It Grow, Black Peter are definitely some that they do well...thank you Joe Russo.

If I had to pick one tune S&R, I think its Golden Road. JK always nails it and the big sound from the band works really, really well. The Terrapin suite I saw at Radio City worked really well too.

Any song that Phil doesn't sing & any Jerry-tune that Bobby doesn't sing?

That response makes no sense. What is your point?

Heck Yea All Good! Went there last year and saw Furthur for the first time and they played one heck of a good show. I have seen them twice since then with the highlight being the incredible Gathering of the Vibes on July 30th last year 2 days before Jerry's birthday.

Bob and Phil have been doing this forever and really know what the heads want to hear. The band line up is similar to my favorite period of the dead '72-'74, with one drummer, Joe Russo and a piano player, Jeff Chimenti, who are both fantastic. They have been playing so old favorites and really playing and jamming well.

My personal favorite Furthur version is Terrapin. They have included the ever so wonderful Alhambra bridge and just kill it! I just cant believe the dead did not keep Alhambra as part of Terrapin.

I've seen Furthur about 8 or 9 times and have listened to a lot more and I'd say that on any given night they can really nail just about any song they play... That being said some songs have a bit more consistency. A few that I think they really play well just about everytime are: Jack Straw, China>Rider, New Speedway, Morning Dew, Unbroken Chain (best jamming they do often times), Terrapin Suite, Ruben and Cherise, Mountain Song, Casey Jones, Cassidy, Shakedown and Viola Lee. I don't know if there's anything that really falls flat on a consistent basis... I don't really care for any of the Jerry ballads that Bob sings (Standing on the Moon and Black Peter come to mind...) and some of the Ryan Adams songs pretty forgettable(except for Nobody Girl, which is awesome). Overall their best shows are the ones where they keep the energy up, I think the spacier, jammier numbers are a little more hit and miss. All this said, go with an open mind and have fun, and if you're gonna root for one thing then root for the drums to be up in the mix because Joe Russo absolutely kills it! A couple shows to whet your appetite: http://www.archive.org/details/furthur2011-03-27.gefells.pasternak.112626.flac16 With Larry Campbell, Theresa Williams, Elvis Costello and Diana Krall. Highlights: Chest Fever, Ship of Fools/IMHBTR medley, Uncle John's (with fiddle) Unbroken Chain and Dew http://www.archive.org/details/furthur2011-03-29.akg.suraci.113450.flac16 Highlights: Black Throated, Sugaree, Bertha, Mountain Song, Scarlet Fire

Eyes of the World. You should be rooting for Eyes of the World. The keyboardist (Jeff Chimenti) jams the hell out of the song after the first verse. And by way, "jams the hell out of the song" doesn't do the man justice.

I love the way that Furthur has brought along Death Don't and Attics. The resurrection of Viola Lee is by far the highlight for me, though.

I'd love to hear a few more Mighty Quinn's !! I think they have just played it once....4/1/11

We are seeing them in Philly in July (as I did last year). I saw them do The Wheel and agree it was nice. They also did a nice Blues for Allah; even my teenager, who rolls his eyes at the Dead in general, was impressed. gotta try to see a little furthur ...
